Traditional Karate


Arts of Self Defense (ASD) first readies student for karate with stretching and power training, confidence building with self defense and empowerment by accomplishment.  All students can proceed at their own pace. Students are taught how to punch, kick, block, and move. Then they are introduced to sport karate to learn sparing and to get an introduction to fighting.

Traditional forms, kata, and the applications of the kata, are taught for self-defense and mental and physical conditioning. Focus, precision, concentration, and spirit are improved with learning kata.

Self-Defense

Before his retirement from the Fair Lawn, NJ police department Sensei Downey was an unarmed self-defense instructor for the county police academy. He is a wealth of self-defense knowledge. We introduce students to the self-defense legal and social context of self-defense and teach methods of graduated response to threats. Self-defense against weapons is taught in advanced classes.

Tai Chi from the Arthritis Foundation (R)

Shodan Al Connelly had a bout to osteoarthritis. Karate was a big help for him in maintaining function and movement. When he learned of the Tai Chi from the Arthritis Foundation program he signed on so that he could share a gental form of the martial arts with a wider community. See the Tai Chi form.
